Suck Contaminants and Bacteria Out of Water
Potable water filtration for personal drinking supplies are critical in impoverished or disaster regions around the world. New nanotech filter brings hope for clean water.
A tea bag sized water filter has been developed that can suck contaminants and bacteria out of water for less than a penny! Researchers at South Africa's Stellenbosch University made the water bottle filtration system from the same material used for the bags of the country's popular rooibos tea. Inside the tea bag sized filters are two tiny filtration ingredients: ultra-thin nanoscale fibers which filter harmful contaminants and another ingredient - grains of carbon, which kills bacteria. The ease of use and low cost will be able to go a long way in improving health conditions for the billions of people without potable water sources -- and could also be helpful in managing water resources after disasters such as floods and droughts, as well.
